Facial treatment comparison: hydrafacial and traditional cleansing

When it comes to caring for facial skin, one of the most common questions we receive at Anthea Health & Aesthetics is: what is better, hydrafacial or traditional facial cleansing? The answer depends on several factors, including your skin type, specific goals, and budget. In this article, we compare both treatments to help you make the best decision.

What is a traditional facial cleansing?

The traditional deep facial cleansing is the classic skin care treatment that has been the foundation of facial aesthetics for decades. It consists of a manual and semi-mechanical multi-step process:

  • Makeup removal and cleansing: All surface residues are removed from the face.
  • Steaming: Steam is applied to open pores and facilitate extraction.
  • Exfoliation: A scrub (physical or enzymatic) is applied to remove dead cells.
  • Manual extraction: The aesthetician extracts comedones (blackheads), milia, and other impurities using manual techniques or specialized instruments.
  • High frequency: High-frequency current is applied to disinfect and close pores.
  • Mask: A mask is applied according to skin type to soothe, hydrate, or purify.
  • Hydration and protection: Finished with serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen.

The typical duration is 60 to 90 minutes and it is recommended every 4 to 6 weeks.

What is a hydrafacial?

The hydrafacial (also known as HydraFacial MD) is a more recent treatment that uses patented vortex technology to cleanse, exfoliate, extract, and hydrate the skin simultaneously. The equipment combines suction, water, and active solutions in a closed system:

  • Cleansing and peeling: A special tip with exfoliating solution removes dead cells and surface sebum.
  • Suction extraction: A painless vacuum system extracts impurities from pores without the manual pressure that can irritate sensitive skin.
  • Deep hydration: Serums with hyaluronic acid, peptides, antioxidants, and other active ingredients are infused directly into the skin.
  • Protection: Ingredients that protect the skin and maintain results are applied.

The complete procedure takes between 30 and 45 minutes, and can be done every 2 to 4 weeks.

Direct comparison: Hydrafacial vs Traditional Facial

Depth of extraction

Traditional facial: Manual extraction allows the professional to work on deep comedones and resistant impurities with greater precision. It is more effective for skin with severe comedogenic acne or superficial cysts.

Hydrafacial: Suction extraction is gentler and more uniform, ideal for regular maintenance and sensitive skin, but may not be sufficient for very deep or adherent impurities.

Hydration level

Traditional facial: Hydration depends on products applied at the end of the treatment. It is effective but superficial.

Hydrafacial: Hydration is an integral part of the treatment. Serums are infused directly into clean pores, achieving much deeper and more effective penetration.

Sensitivity and discomfort

Traditional facial: Manual extraction can be uncomfortable, especially on sensitive skin. It may leave temporary redness for 24-48 hours.

Hydrafacial: Practically painless. Redness is minimal and disappears within a few hours. You can apply makeup immediately after.

Recovery time

Traditional facial: Between 24 and 48 hours of redness and sensitivity. Sun exposure immediately after is not recommended.

Hydrafacial: No recovery time. It is the ideal treatment before a special event because the skin looks radiant immediately.

Which is better for your skin type?

  • Oily, acne-prone skin: Traditional facial cleansing is generally more effective because manual extraction allows removing deep impurities that the hydrafacial may not reach.
  • Sensitive or reactive skin: Hydrafacial is the best option because it avoids the manual pressure that can cause irritation, broken capillaries, or adverse reactions.
  • Mature or dehydrated skin: Hydrafacial is superior thanks to its ability to infuse hydrating and anti-aging ingredients directly into the skin.
  • Combination or normal skin: Both treatments work well. An ideal strategy is to alternate: traditional cleansing every 2-3 months for deep cleaning and monthly hydrafacial for maintenance.
  • Skin with spots or sun damage: Hydrafacial can be combined with depigmenting serums for a more targeted treatment.

Can both treatments be combined?

At Anthea Health & Aesthetics, we frequently recommend combined protocols. For example, starting with a deep facial cleansing to remove all accumulated impurities and then maintaining with monthly hydrafacial sessions. This combination offers the best long-term results.

We can also complement both treatments with facial radiofrequency for a complete rejuvenating effect, or with microdermabrasion for skin that needs intensive cell renewal.
